Awards celebrate growth despite tough year

[CDATA[
Any year in Ontario is a hard year to survive in business, but not only have this year's finalists for the London Chamber of Commerce's annual Business Achievement Awards survived, but they have flourished.

And if ever there was a year you might have forgiven the chamber for taking a pass on this celebration of business excellence, surely 2009-10 was it.

So, what makes this event such a perennial winner, and why has it become the largest business awards celebration of its kind in Ontario?

The answer lies in the determination and grit of the many companies that have allowed their names to stand as candidates for these prestigious awards. The number of nominees this year is a record.

Why this phenomenon? It's anyone's guess, but my sense is it harkens back to the old axiom -- when the goin' gets tough, the tough get goin'. That is just London's nature. And to borrow another proverb, if necessity is truly the mother of invention, then no business community I'm aware of has shown it can respond to necessity any better than that in London, Ont.

Perhaps the winning formula for this year's crop of finalists can be traced to the roots of the event. After all, the list of previous recipients reads like a who's who of corporate Canada. There can be little doubt this year's finalists have found inspiration from corporate icons such as Ford, Kellogg, Canada Trust, London Life and 3M. Just as many have been motivated by the home-grown successes of the likes of Trojan, Libro, Phoenix, Voyageur and GoodLife.

But beyond the historic motivation, each finalist has shown a common thread or ingredient; that inner directive that says, we are entrepreneurs, we are by nature competitive and we like to win.

It's why Black Fly Beverage bucked the odds to become the first micro-distillery in Ontario, and has been given the first distillery licence awarded in Ontario in more than 100 years.

It's why Echidna Solutions crawled out of that one-man shop in the basement to lead a dynamic team in its state-of-the-art downtown location.

It's why London X-Ray Associates, founded here in 1931, became a world-class radiology practice and is southern Ontario's first independent digital (filmless) imaging clinic.

It's why TRY Recycling has earned a reputation for industry leadership, product quality and for using science to set industry standards. It figured out waste reduction and recycling are no longer options, but our only choice.

The large company category is no different, albeit the scope of enterprise bigger. Take Centennial Windows. In a year where the housing industry took hard hits, the company has sustained employment for 192 people, and prides itself on an 86% increase in employment in the last four years.

For its part, Digital Extremes -- with more than 100 of the industry's most talented artists, designers and programmers -- works hard to make its employees the best they can be by providing a positive work atmosphere that drives creativity and innovation into the company's games. Focused on reducing the risk and improving the efficiency, their technology helps developers make better games -- on time and on budget.

J-AAR Excavating Ltd, incorporated in 1982 as a heavy civil construction company based in London, gets its entrepreneurship from its late founder John Aarts, who valued strong relationships with his employees and uncompromising commitment to quality, innovation, integrity, initiative, and aggressive performance.

And, since 1985 StarTech.com has provided a complete range of IT and A/V products to a range of customers. Its rsuccess can be found in its dedication to providing comprehensive information to simplify purchasing and the solutions customers need.

So, beyond the entrepreneurial spirit that binds them, are there other common denominators in all our finalists this year?

I would submit there are. I think you can safely add the fear of failure, their innate sense of opportunism, their well-honed survival skills and, finally, that elusive and hard-to-define business spirit of London -- the entrepreneurial capital of Canada.

Gerry Macartney is general manager of the London Chamber of Commerce. Appearing in London Free Press Business Monday, www.lfpress.com
Big Achievements (Exerpt Business London Cover Story)

[CDATA[
[A Q&A with] Voyageur Transportation Services representative Corey Jarvis, Director of Human Resources

Industry: Transportation

Recent business accomplishment? Recently awarded over 30 bus runs in Wellington and Dufferin counties for school busing, with service beginning in September 2010.

What is one thing about your business that most people don’t know? Voyageur Training Solutions offers education in areas such as driver licensing, safety and compliance, lifting device certification, dispatch, taxi and limousine training (City of London), first aid and CPR, and over 30 online management and health-and-safety courses.

What is your organization’s management style? We believe that employees leave their managers. The premise behind this idea is that people are tied to their working group—not the company in general. This belief has lead to high employee retention, increased communication, and a positive work culture. All methods, tools, and improvements are linked to employee core values.

What are the top skills you bring to your job? A talent for streamlining complex work processes. I thrive in an environment that requires multiple concurrent projects.

What is your customer-service philosophy? We embrace two balanced types of customer service: the human resources philosophy that the employee is our customer; and, on the corporate side, we still embrace [founder] Norm's rule to “Make it happen!”

What’s the best business advice you’ve ever been given? My first boss told me the keys to great customer service were to “Never say no to the customer,” and “Remember the WIT philosophy: Whatever it Takes.”

Checker Trips For Haiti

[CDATA[
On Thursday, February 4th, the Brokers and Drivers at Checker Limousine took it upon themselves to donate proceeds from the day to Doctors Without Borders. The money was given to assist in the Haiti relief effort. Over $1800 was raised through Broker, Driver, and customer donations. It was a successful day and a modest contribution to the aid needed to help rebuild in Haiti. The effort was initiated by an individual that had once been on the receiving end of aid from Doctors Without Borders. Voyageur is proud to work with such outstanding and generous individuals. As a cornerstone value for Voyageur, we are committed to being a strong community partner; for our local, and global, communities.
]]
